What's the Difference Between a Novel, a Novella, and a Short Story?

They're not just "long, medium, and short." Each length is actually good at telling different kinds of stories.

Not every story needs 300 pages — and not every story fits in 10. The length an author picks isn't random; different lengths are genuinely better at telling different kinds of stories.

Short story: one moment, sharply focused

A short story is usually under about 7,500 words — something you could read in one sitting. Because there's so little room, short stories usually focus on one character, one moment, or one turning point, rather than a whole sprawling plot. Every sentence has to earn its place.

Novella: the in-between length

A novella sits between a short story and a full novel — longer than a short story, but shorter than a typical novel (often somewhere between about 20,000 and 50,000 words). It has room for more plot and character development than a short story, but usually still centers on one focused storyline, without the multiple subplots a full novel might have.

Novel: room to breathe

A novel has space for multiple characters, subplots, and a story that unfolds gradually over time. That extra room lets an author build a whole world, develop several relationships, and let tension build slowly across many chapters.

Why length is a real choice, not an accident

A writer with an idea about one intense afternoon might choose a short story, because stretching it into a 300-page novel would water it down. A writer building a whole fantasy world with dozens of characters needs a novel's room to do that properly. Matching the length to the idea is part of the craft.

Quick take: Short stories, novellas, and novels aren't just "sizes" — each length is suited to a different kind of story, and good authors pick the length that fits their idea, not the other way around.

A question to think about

Think of an idea for a story you might want to tell. Would it work better as a tightly focused short story, or does it need a novel's worth of room? Why?
