The Shortest War in History Lasted 38 Minutes

Most wars are measured in years. This one was measured in minutes — and it changed how we think about conflict entirely.

When you think of a war, you probably picture something that drags on for years. But the shortest war ever recorded, fought between Britain and the Zanzibar Sultanate in 1896, lasted somewhere between 38 and 45 minutes, depending on how it's measured.

What actually happened

After a sultan friendly to British interests died suddenly, his cousin took over the palace and declared himself the new sultan — without British approval, which was required under an agreement at the time. Britain saw this as a direct challenge and issued an ultimatum: step down, or face an attack.

When the deadline passed with no surrender, British ships stationed nearby opened fire on the palace. The defending forces were quickly overwhelmed, the palace caught fire, and the new sultan fled. By the time it was over, less than an hour had passed.

Why it ended so fast

The imbalance in military power was enormous. Britain, at the height of its naval strength during this period of history, faced a much smaller, less-equipped force defending the palace. There was simply no realistic way for the defenders to hold out for long.

Why this tiny war still matters

Even though it was brief, the Anglo-Zanzibar War is a useful example of a bigger historical pattern: many conflicts during this era weren't really "wars" between evenly matched sides — they were often lopsided uses of military power to enforce political control, especially during a period when powerful nations were expanding influence over smaller territories around the world.

Quick take: Not every war is a long, evenly matched struggle. Some of history's most one-sided conflicts reveal a lot about the power imbalances of their time.

A question to think about

If a conflict is over in under an hour because one side is so much more powerful, do you think "war" is even the right word for it? What would you call it instead?
