You've probably heard the word "refugee" on the news. It describes one of the hardest situations a person can go through — but the word itself is often used loosely. Here's what it actually, specifically means.

The specific meaning

A refugee is someone who has been forced to leave their home country because staying would put them in serious danger — often from war, violence, or persecution for who they are (like their religion, ethnicity, or political beliefs). Importantly, this is different from someone who moves to another country by choice, for a new job or a fresh start; a refugee's departure isn't really a choice in the same way.

Why people become refugees

The causes are almost always serious and often overlapping:

• War or armed conflict making it unsafe to stay
• Persecution — being targeted specifically because of identity or beliefs
• Natural disasters that destroy the ability to safely live somewhere, in some cases

Leaving isn't simple, either. It often means leaving behind homes, belongings, jobs, extended family, and community — usually with only what can be carried.

What happens after leaving

Refugees often first arrive in a neighboring country, sometimes staying temporarily in camps or shelters while their situation is sorted out.
